Frequently asked questions
What colour suit should a man have?
A versatile wardrobe of suits can make a huge difference in a man’s style and appearance. Here are some classic colours to consider:
Navy blue
- Why: This is the most versatile suit colour, suitable for business, formal events and even smart-casual.
- When to wear: Job interviews, weddings, evening events and business meetings.
- What to combine with: goes well with almost any shirt and tie combination, especially white, light blue and pastel shades
Charcoal grey
- Why: A little more formal than navy blue, charcoal grey is a perfect balance between professional and stylish.
- When to wear: Business events, meetings, funerals and other formal occasions.
- What to pair it with: White, light grey and soft pastel shirts, along with classic ties in dark, solid colours.
Black
- Why: Ideal for the most formal occasions, but not as versatile as navy blue or grey.
- When to wear: Black-tie events, weddings, funerals and evening events.
- What to pair with: crisp white shirt, black tie or bow tie and black shoes.
Light grey
- Why: Great for spring and summer or less formal occasions.
- When to wear: Daytime events, outdoor weddings or business events.
- What to pair it with: light or patterned shirts, pastel or vibrantly coloured ties.
Dark brown
- Why: A more casual, stylish option that does well at daytime events or evening gatherings in a more relaxed setting.
- When to wear: Daytime events, outdoor weddings or as a more creative business suit.
- What to combine with: shirts in earth tones, light blue and white shirts.
Patterned (pinstripe or checked)
- Why: A patterned suit, especially in a subtle pinstripe or check, adds flair while remaining professional.
- When to wear: Business events, formal daytime events or when you want a polished but unique look.
- What to pair with: Plain shirts to keep the focus on the pattern of the suit.
Each of these colours has its ideal setting, but what matters most is your personal preference. You need to feel comfortable and confident in your suit.
How to take care of your suit?
Taking good care of your suit will make it last longer and keep it looking sharp. Here are some tips from Cosutmiz for maintaining your suit:
Dry clean; only when necessary:
- Why: Excessive dry cleaning can damage fabric fibres and cause premature wear.
- Tip: Dry clean only when necessary – usually every 6-12 wears or when stains appear. For woollen suits, 2-3 times a year is usually sufficient.
Brush and clean on site
- Why: Dust, dirt and small particles accumulate on suits, especially wool suits.
- Tip: Use a clothing brush with soft bristles to remove particles after each wear. Clean small stains immediately with a damp cloth and mild soap if needed.
Airing out
- Why: If you wear the same suit repeatedly without airing it out, moisture and odours can linger.
- Tip: After wearing your suit, let it hang outside or in a well-ventilated area for a few hours before storing it in your closet. This will help remove odours and moisture.
Use a quality hanger
- Why: Ordinary hangers can distort the shoulders and cause creases.
- Tip: Use a wooden or padded hanger with wide shoulders so the suit keeps its shape.
Dry clean, do not iron
- Why: Ironing can damage the fabric and cause unwanted shine or stains.
- Tip: Use a hand steamer to remove creases or hang the suit in a steaming bathroom. If you do have to iron, use low heat with a pressing cloth.
Store well
- Why: Improper storage can cause creases and fabric degradation.
- Tip: Store your suit in a breathable garment bag (avoid plastic bags as they retain moisture). Hang it in a spacious area where it will not be crushed by other clothes.
Rotate your suits
- Why: If you wear the same suit too often without resting, it can wear out faster.
- Tip: Rotate several suits during the week to ‘rest’ them in between.
Avoid heavy trouser and jacket pockets
- Why: Putting heavy items in pockets stretches the fabric and can ruin the shape of the suit.
- Tip: Keep your pockets light. Use a briefcase or bag for larger items.
Pay attention to the weather
- Why: Rain and humidity can damage the fabric of suits, especially wool and silk.
- Tip: If your suit gets wet, let it dry naturally on a hanger – never use heat or put it in the dryer. If it is very wet, take it to a professional cleaner.
Check and repair regularly
- Why: Small problems such as loose knots or small cracks can get worse over time.
- Tip:Check for loose threads, buttons or small damages and get them repaired immediately. Tailors can easily fix this before it becomes a bigger problem.
With consistent maintenance, your suits will last longer and Costumiz’s tailored suits will stay looking fresh and polished!
